The Mid Atlantic Brown Swiss Calf sale celebrated its 42nd year with another good spring sale. Consignors and buyers were met by a nice springtime day for the sale held at the Frederick Fairgrounds, Frederick, MD.  The sale saw 26 head of “typey” calves with excellent pedigrees go through the ring and sell for an average of $2100, of which 8 were March calves. A unique and interesting fact is that the sale is small in numbers - but calves sold to nine different states - only five stayed in Maryland. The breakdown was: PA- 9; VA- 5; NJ- 2; and 1 each going to CT., NY., NC., KS., and VT. This sale has quite a following and reputation so the sale committee congratulates new buyers, as well as repeat buyers.

Topping the sale at $4500 was a very correct and stylish December calf ready to show this summer and get to the big fall shows!  Rad-ical Goliath Good Luck is sired by Goliath. This consignment is backed by a strong maternal line and has lots of potential. Good Luck sold to Terri Packard, Jenny Trapp, and Cindy Warner, Frederick, Maryland and was the consignment of Lindsey Rucks, Okeechobee, Florida.

The second high seller of the day was Top Acres HP Peppy Glow selling for $4400. A tall, dark and long calf she can take the competition in the Fall Calf class. This stylish September calf is sired by Chilli Pepper. She was the purchase of Larry Geiwitz, Volant, PA and consigned by Top Acres and Hillpoint Partners, St. Paris, OH.

The third high selling animal was a great SeptemberGrandslam with great lines and deep body. Top Acres GS Snapple sold for $3800. Snapple sold to Richard Sharer, Laceyville, Pennsylvania a new buyer at this year’s sale. She was the consignment of Wayne Sliker, St. Paris, OH.

Staying in the $3000 category, Cutting Edge T Brook ET sold for $3200 to another new buyer, Patrick Kennedy, Cornwall, CT.  She was the consignment of Ken Main and Peter Vail, Copake, NY.

Tying for fifth high sellers at $3000 each were Random Luck B Priscilla ET who sold to Richard Sharer, Laceyville, PA. She was consigned by Ken Main and Peter Vail, Copake, NY.  And also selling for $3000 was Dublin Hills Gib Sashay ET. She was the consignment of Jeff True, Perry, NY. and makes her new home with Darren Benfer, Longford, KS.

Another highlight of the sale was the Youth Fun Auction which starts the sale. Bidding was brisk on many items and topping the sale at $600 was a lovely basket filled with various items and assembled by Bonnie Remsberg. This basket was sold to benefit Tyler McDonald, the son of Jeremy and Missy McDonald, Stephens City, VA. Our good friend and fellow breeder, Jeremy was lost tragically in a farm accident in December, 2015. The basket was donated by the Maryland Brown Swiss Association and bought by The Rucks family, Okeechobee, FL., Cindy Warner, Frederick, and Tom and Bonnie Remsberg, Middletown, MD.

The Mid Atlantic Brown Swiss Calf Sale is managed by the Maryland Brown Swiss Association and is the major fundraiser for supporting shows, youth programs, scholarships, and sponsorships.

The auctioneer for the sale was Denny Remsburg, while Wayne Sliker read pedigrees.  Emmy Heffner and Jennifer Martin clerked the sale with assistance from Emmy Covell running sales slips.  Brown Swiss members and junior members were instrumental in helping in the barn, and on sale day.
